Vocation Themed Intercessions for Advent & Christmas

First Sunday of Advent – 27th November, 2022

In our Gospel Jesus warns his followers to be attentive – to “stay awake” to “stand ready”.  We pray that those who the Lord is calling to follow him as priest, deacon or religious, will be “awake” to the call of the Lord in their hearts.

Second Sunday of Advent — December 4, 2022

Just as John the Baptist answered the call to be a “voice in the wilderness” to “prepare a way for the Lord” – we pray for those in our society who are called to be the voice in the wilderness of our modern society by living their lives in service as a priest, deacon or religious.

Third Sunday of Advent — December 11, 2022

In our second reading, St James writing to the early converts to Christianity to give them encouragement says: “You too have to be patient; do not lose heart, because the Lord’s coming will be soon”.  We pray for all who are discerning a vocation to the priesthood, diaconate or religious life, that they will not lose heart and that they will be blessed with grace by the Lord’s coming.

Fourth Sunday of Advent — December 18, 2022

In our Gospel we hear how Joseph discerned the guidance of the Angel of the Lord through a dream and found the courage to be counter cultural and take Mary into his home.  To make the decision today to be a priest, deacon or religious is counter-cultural and takes courage.  We pray for all who are discerning, that they may have the trust to answer the Lord’s call.

    Christmas — December 25, 2022

In Luke’s Gospel, we hear that Mary treasured all the things that the shepherds told HER that had been revealed to them by the Angels and that she pondered them in her heart. We pray that parents find it in their hearts to support their son or daughter who is trying to discern a vocation.

Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God — January 1, 2023

The shepherds praised and glorified God and Mary treasured and pondered on the birth of her son and her role in His life.  We pray that through Mary’s intercession, those who are called to serve as priests, deacons or religious can, like the shepherds, give glory to God.

    The Epiphany — January 8, 2023

As soon as Jesus was baptised, the Spirit of God descended on Him and a voice from heaven spoke, ‘This is my Son, the Beloved; my favour rests on him.’  We pray for all whom the Lord is calling to the priesthood, the diaconate of religious life, that the Spirit of God will rest on them and that they will hear his voice in their hearts.
